The Brodie Blog is back! When you live in the most resident-friendly South Austin apartments for rent, you get top-tier advice twice a month. This week, our staff at is talking about personal finances.
If you don’t pay attention to any other online blog you read this week, pay attention to this one. Anyone who actually takes this advice and puts it to good use will be far richer at the end of 2017 than they were at the beginning of the year. The trick to reading about financial advice is you actually have to start doing it. Thankfully, there are tons of apps and other pieces of technology out there than will help even the least financially savvy person stick to their budget.
The sooner you do these things, the sooner you’ll start to notice a little extra cash in your pocket. Actually, who are we kidding? No one uses cash anymore. Let’s rephrase that.
The sooner you start taking this advice, the sooner you’ll start to notice bigger numbers on your phone screen when you check your checking account on your banking app. Hmmm…that phrase really doesn’t have the same ring to it does it?
The point remains, so let’s get started. Here are three pieces of financial advice that are no-brainers. You know you should be doing these things, so start doing them!
1. Make your own lunch at least four days a week.
If you’re serious about saving money, you’re going to have to commit to not going out for lunch most days. It’s a harsh reality, but one we all must face as budget-minded adults. Take some time on Sunday nights to hunker down in the kitchen of your South Austin apartment and prepare 4 meals. We say four because we want you to save money, not be miserable! This way, you’ll still be able to splurge on lunch one day each week without feeling guilty about it.
You probably won’t like eating a pre made lunch at first, but give it time. The trick is to find a lunch meal that you actually look forward to and enjoy. Mess around with different lunchtime combinations until you find one that works. It will all be worth it when you check your bank account at the end of the week.
2. Make your savings both automatic and repeated.
Sadly, we can’t trust ourselves to save our own money. That’s why the automatic transfer was invented. If you get your paychecks on the same dates each month, you can easily set up some automatic transfers that will take money out of your checking and put it in your savings. You can also use apps like Digit and Acorn to automatically save small amounts of money each week. It all adds up, and you’ll miss the money less than you think.
3. Pay no attention to the Joneses, they’re probably in debt anyway.
You know the Joneses, right? They’re the ones with the brand new car, the fancy new entertainment center and the seemingly endless supply of new restaurant recommendations. You want to live the lifestyle they live because they seem like they’re having a blast, but the truth is, they’re probably living above their means. Most people in America do this. Unless the Joneses are making an obscene amount of money, they’re likely living in debt. You can live well without going overboard like them. Look, you already live in a luxury community in South Austin! You’re doing just fine, and you don’t have to overspend to do so.
